Our Favorite Properties from Modernism Week 2019

Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley just ended the celebration that is Modernism Week, which ran from Thursday, February 14 to Sunday, February 24. This year, the awe-inspiring midcentury design and architectural paradise activated events throughout Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and Desert Hot Springs. Hot spots included the Annenberg Theater, the Palm Springs Art Museum where patrons could visit the galleries upstairs, CAMP headquarters to check out vendor booths, and 200-300 home tours.

According to Metropolis Magazine, “It is also partially concurrent with the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale, which was initiated by a coalition of community organizations a few years prior to Modernism Week’s founding.”

As a Southern California resident, I visit Palm Springs every year for some mod style, palm trees and general good times. I also have an eye for spotting the perfect modern desert residence on Airbnb for the right vibe. So, here are some properties that caught our eye during Modernism Week.

The Christopher Kennedy Compound

Probably one of the most anticipated home tours of the week, this showcase property is located in the exclusive Indian Canyons neighborhood. Kennedy brought together notable designers from around the country to design each room.

L’Horizon Resort & Spa

This beautiful palm springs property was actually restored by LA-based residential designer Steve Hermann, giving life back to the historical 1950s pad to the stars. Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable were frequent guests and many others from yesteryear’s Hollywood elite.

Desert Eichler

According to Dwell magazine, Desert Eichler is a newly-built residence by KUD Properties and is a replica of the original homes designed by Joseph Eichler, but modernized for today’s standard of living.

Green Gables

I mean, you can do no wrong with a lime-green slanted awning in Palm Springs.  This gorgeous midcentury modern residence was built by architects, Palmer & Krisel in 1957 and completely renovated by H3K Design.

Sunnylands

This has to be my absolute personal favorite. It’s as though this historic estate was plucked right out of the 60s era virtually untouched with perfectly manicured shrubs, painted an oh la la pink that simply cannot be duplicated except with C2 Paint, of course. This is an A. Quincy Jones home project, completed in 1966 for philanthropists Walter and Leonore Annenberg. According to Architectural Digest, the tour included, “the main house with Rodin sculptures, an Impressionist art collection, and guest quarters, where Presidents Obama, Bush, and Regan have stayed amid the Billy Haines decor.”
